Benn Jordan's sound has certainly evolved since
Soundtrack to a Vacant Life. Though I'm hesitant to call
Arboreal his magnum opus for the sole reason that I only own the two aforementioned albums, it's not a huge stretch of the imagination. Jordan combines pensive/ambient electronics with rugged and intricate beats to form a real work of art here. The instrumentation is less varied than on
Soundtrack and I particularly missed the folky acoustics of tracks like "Steel for Pappa," but what Jordan loses from
Soundtrack in transition to
Arboreal he regains twofold through the sheer power and subtlety of his soundscapes. For sure one of the best yet of 2010.
