The Seedy Seeds - Count the Days

Fanciful indie-pop in the same vein as The Dodos. I don't know. I shouldn't blog with a hangover.

Motion City Soundtrack - My Dinosaur Life

Upon their arrival to the Columbia floor, Motion City Soundtrack pick up after the safe mess of their previous album with the dustpan of growth. Yes, I just said that. "My Dinosaur Life's" fresh take on the band's bouncing hook-friendly style sees Justin Pierre taking liberties with his traditional vocal sound and production returning to the right side of "shiny" (thanks to Mark Hoppus' return as producer.)

Surfer Blood- Astrocoast

First off, "Swim" is this year's anthem to being young and fucking the future. Just bask in the sun and get lost in the wave.

The Cat Empire - So Many Nights

The Cat Empire's third release sees their trademark crisp, flowy reggae-ska infused with a more pop-oriented sound. Not necessarily their best, but a grand installment and starting-point alike.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor- Slow Riot For New Zero Kanada

There's an old saying... dates back for generations... be prepared for anything at any time from anybody, don't take no shit, always stand your ground. People wanna come up to me and run their mouth - guess what? I'll throw them through the fucking window...i won't think a thing of it.

Like So - Goes to the Supermarket and Never Returns

I'm puncturing the electro theme here mannnn

Interesting if anything, Like So create an evocative and fuzzy as all hell short-length album. At some points it's fun and smooth, at others it digs into complexity. This is where I tried thinking of a clever way to say it's a murky mix of Sunny Day Real Estate and The Get Up Kids.

Snakeosaurus Rex - Rhino

Alt rock reminiscent of Minus the Bear, in both sound and attitude. Also, that fucking awesome name.

it's a SNAKE DINOSAUR

Kenna - New Sacred Cow

Google "kenna new sacred cow genre": everywhere you turn are throngs of people befuddled that they cannot define Kenna's 2003 release into a particular genre. Many will shrug and label it alternative and call it a day; others say electronica and others yet have said new wave hip hop. It seems to me that because of the uniqueness of this album it sparks a response unique to each individual listener--trying to classify it and thus limit it is futile. Instead of struggling with how to think about the record and what category it should be pigeonholed into, it seems simpler and more fulfilling to just recognize it for what it is: an innovative, defiant work that transcends our typical notions of musical style. Check this shizzit out.

Jaga Jazzist- What We Must

Like post rock but want to mix it up a little bit? You can't just have sugary cereals every morning kiddos, and this album's like Honey Bunches of Oats to the majority of post rock sugar cereals. Sure, you can have your Lucky Charms and your Fruity Pebbles and that's nice but come on, you'll get sick of it eventually. This is the change in your diet you need, otherwise you'll get jaded and make stupid statements about breakfast like "it all tastes the same whine whine whine."

plus, it's jazzy.

fun. - Aim and Ignite

This album is so fun to listen to, like seriously. Maybe I haven't put a lot of effort into my album descriptions lately but let me just say that this album is good, very good. Go enjoy how good this is. And the dude has a really good voice too. I would go so far as to say that it is supragood. Do I mean supergood? Nope, supragood. That means you have to listen to this because it is really good.

Animal Collective- Here Comes the Indian

Everyone has this weird idea that Animal Collective's current run of awesome albums started at Sung Tongs. This isn't necessarily true. Animal Collective's accessible shit started at Sung Tongs, but believe you me, their string of good shit started right here, at Here Comes the Indian. Here Comes the Indian finds Animal Collective starting to toy with pop but still deeply entrenched in their experimental roots. The result is essential. Now there are some who will tell you that this is Animal Collective's sixth best release, and you know something? They're probably right. But that's like saying the 2009 Yankees were the 6th best Yankee team in history. Who gives a shit?

Pink Floyd - Wish You Were Here

As the opening of the first song "Shine On You Crazy Diamond, Part I" hazily drifts in and out of your consciousness, and then that squealing guitar begins to lament to you from a far off place, your first premonition of the album to come hits you: this is scary good. The tracks continue their smooth trek through a perfect sonic landscape and arrive at a peak above just about any other work of that era or genre, and your first reaction is proven not to be folly: it's not too good to be true. Wish You Were Here really is that good.
